CITIZENS RIGHTS DEPARTMENT

CITIZENS RIGHTS DEPARTMENT

Citizens Rights Department is the department that promotes the protection of rights of citizens. The department renders quality services through quick disposal of cases by employing Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms.

 

The department is divided into two units:

  1. The General Complaints Unit
  2. The Custodial Centre Watch Unit

The functions of the General Complaints units under the department are as follows

  1. Resolves cases amicably out of court
  2. Entertains petitions from the public bothering on injustice, corruption, marital disputes, landlord and tenant issues and any form of unfair treatment.
  3. Renders legal advice to indigent persons on their Fundamental Human Rights.
  4. Investigates complaints and recommend steps towards mediation or litigation where necessary

Functions of the Custodial Centre Watch Unit

  1. Promotes activities to ensure the decongestion of custodial centres

Collaborates with the NBA (Edo State Chapter) on pro-bono basis

Key Achievements of the Department                       

  • Within the last six months the department has assisted in the recovery of financial benefits on behalf of widows from the estate of their deceased spouses to the tune of N11,400,000

2.) There was also intervention in the reduction of medical bills from N2,168,140 to N744,000,000 for four complainants (patients)

3.) The department mediated in some employment contracts and assisted the complainants to recover unpaid salaries

4.)  Series of complaints on refund of rents were resolved on behalf of complainants

5.) The department has also intervened in many other cases of upkeep of children and some people are still collecting monthly allowances from the office for the upkeep of their children.

 SUCCESSES RECORDED FOR THE DIFFERENT CORRECTIONAL VISITS SO FAR.

  • Within the last six months (from January 2022 to June 2022) a total 120 inmates were released from the various Custodial Centres in Edo State in collaboration with NBA Benin Branch pro bono Lawyers.
