The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Edo State, Dr. Samson Osagie, has presented the State’s position on constitutional review to the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review.
This presentation was made during a public hearing in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, where on behalf of the State, the Attorney General advocated for crucial reforms to enhance Nigeria’s governance and security framework, emphasising the need for State Police, citing the importance of additional security layers to complement Federal Agencies.
He also called for judicial independence, stressing that the judiciary should be free from external influences to ensure fair dispensation of Justice, noting that under the leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo, the Edo State Government is committed to contributing to the constitutional review process.
Dr. Osagie further highlighted the State’s proposals, which include electoral reforms, inclusive governance and fiscal federalism. These reforms, he argued, would promote transparency, accountability and equitable distribution of resources.
Notably, the Edo State Government opposed the creation of new states by carving out portions of existing states, particularly any proposal involving parts of Edo State and also underscored the importance of preserving the State’s traditional boundaries and ancestral heritage.
The State’s input is expected to shape the constitutional review exercise, ensuring that Nigeria’s fundamental laws reflect the aspirations of its people.
